THE EXTENDED
SOLAR SYSTEM

Comparing the smallest and largest celestial bodies in our solar system and beyond leads to some of the most massive concepts in scale and size to wrap ones head around; and my plan was to fit it all on a single page to the viewer.

The composition from all the circles in the piece created a beautiful fractal like pattern, showing the extent of the scale in our little chunk of the galaxy. In total there are around 650 astronomical bodies in this design, consisting of all the major planets and minor planets, natural satellites and asteroids that are found in our solar system.

INFORMATION PANEL

The style also used to give the work a granite like texture was inspired by marble engraving; this was a deliberate contrast to the science fiction or futurism space appeals to. The study of our cosmos is the oldest in science and I felt the use of this style of artwork is seldom seen when approaching the topic of science and maths; and gives the final piece and topic a novel approach.
